Borobudur, Indonesia Largest Buddhist Temple in the World

Footage Nusantara - In Indonesia, especially on the island of Java, there are many Buddhist cultural heritages. One of the largest is Borobudur Temple. Borobudur Temple is located in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. Its location is close to two other Buddhist temples, namely Pawon Temple and Mendut Temple. In 1991, Borobudur Temple was designated as a world cultural heritage by UNESCO. Thus, this temple is one of the very important heritages that should be preserved.
Borobudur Temple has been restored 3 times, namely in 1814-1822 by Thomas Stamford Raffles, the second in 1907-1911 by Theodoor van Erp, and the last major restoration in 1973-1983 by the Indonesian Government and UNESCO.
This monument has five square terraces and three round terraces with 72 stupas, and one large stupa at the top. There is also a narrow corridor formed by the balustrade around the terrace.
There are 1,460 reliefs that tell stories and 1,212 decorative reliefs, with a total of 2,672 panels covering an area of 2,500 square meters. If stretched, the total length of these reliefs reaches 3,000 meters. Each square terrace faces the four cardinal directions. On the balustrade, there are hundreds of Buddha statues in various poses. The three round terraces above do not have balustrades and are decorated with stupas, each containing one Buddha statue. The main stupa at the top of the monument has a diameter of 10 meters. The Borobudur plan covers an area of 123 meters x 123 meters with a height of 35 meters.
Route to Borobudur Temple
There are two ways to reach Magelang, namely by air and land. The air route can be reached by plane while the land route can be reached by car or train.
- Air route: Magelang can be reached by air which lands at Yogyakarta International Airport in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta. After that, you can continue your journey to Magelang City using public transportation or rent a vehicle for 2-2.5 hours.
- Land route: You can take the Trans Java Toll Road from Jakarta with a travel time of approximately 8 hours using a private car. Or, you can also take an intercity bus that stops at the Tidar Terminal also known as the Soekarno-Hatta Terminal.
Another alternative is to take the train from a major city station in Java to Yogyakarta Station, either at Tugu Station or Lempuyangan. Then, continue with public transportation or rent a vehicle to Magelang City for approximately 1 hour.
