The Sangiran site holds a wealth of ancient fossils, ranging from ancient human fossils, and ancient animals, to the results of prehistoric human culture. However, it is not only the archaeological sites that have potential but also the historical tourism in Sangiran Tourism Village.
The Sangiran site has an area of 56 km2 covering three districts in Sragen, namely Gemolong, Kalijambe, and Plupuh, and one district in Karanganyar Regency, namely Gondangrejo. Besides being the most complete ancient human fossil site in Java, Sangiran is the most important site for the development of various fields of science, especially for research in anthropology, archaeology, biology, paleoanthropology, geology, and tourism. The existence of the Sangiran Site is very useful for studying the life of prehistoric humans because this site is equipped with ancient human fossils, ancient human cultural products, ancient flora and fauna fossils along with their stratigraphic description. Visitors can get information about ancient humans and other things about antiquity at the Sangiran Museum.
Sangiran is passed by a beautiful river, the Cemoro River, which empties into the Bengawan Solo. This area experiences soil erosion so that the layers of soil formed are different from one layer of soil to another. It is in these layers of soil that until now many ancient human and animal fossils have been found.
Some ancient human fossils are kept in the Geological Museum in Bandung and the Paleoanthropology Laboratory, in Yogyakarta. Judging from the findings, the Sangiran Site is a prehistoric site that has a very important role in understanding the process of human evolution and is the most complete archaeological site in Asia and even in the world.
