Karimunjawa National Park: A Captivating Tropical Paradise in North Java

Mount Bromo's Luhur Poten Temple, a Ritual Center in the Desert

As we know, the Tengger people cannot be separated from Mount Bromo and Yadnya Kasada.

For the Tengger people, Mount Bromo and Pura Luhur Poten are sacred and important places both in daily life and in religious celebrations. Pura Luhur Poten is a plot of land and a temple-like building located in the middle of a sea of sand (precisely between Mount Bromo and Mount Batok) as a place for the Kasada ceremony to take place.

Poten Temple or Pura Luhur Poten Mount Bromo is located in the middle of the sea of sand Mount Bromo became one of the places of worship of the Tengger Tribe to praise Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa as the manifestation of Lord Brahma. This Tengger temple was built in 2000 with a mixture of Balinese and Javanese architecture whose buildings are divided into 3 zones or 3 mandalas.

The three zones include:
  • Mandala Utama is a place of worship or worship in which there is a Padma (place of worship).
  • Mandala Madya (center) is a place for the preparation and accompaniment of prayer ceremonies
  • Mandala Nista (front) is an open space that has a single door as a place of transition from outside to enter the temple.

If you start the trip from Malang, then you can use Jalan Ledok Dowo, but this trip will take about one and a half hours with a distance of about 52 km. First, you can take Jalan J.A. Suprapto 1 to Jalan Jaksa Agung Suprapto/Jalan Raya Lawang - Malang/Jalan Raya Malang - Gempol/Jalan Raya Surabaya - Malang. Then take Jl. Dr. Cipto, Jl. Cokroaminoto, and Jl. Trunojoyo to Jl. Ir. H. Juanda in Jodipan. Turn left onto Jl. Ir. H. Juanda. Stay on Jl. Muharto to Buring. Stay on Jl. Kidal Tumpal. Driving from Jl. Raya Gubugklakah, Jl. Gubug Klakah, and Jl. Jemplang to Cemoro Lawang. Then turn left.  Keep following the road, and you will arrive at your destination.

Route from Yogyakarta City Center


If you want to see this temple in Bromo and start the journey from Yogyakarta City Center, then you can use Jalan Ir. Soekarno, but this trip will take about six hours with a distance of about 433 km. First, use the Salatiga - Kertosono Toll Road/Jalan Tol Solo - Kertosono/Jalan Tol Solo - Ngawi at Bulakan from Jalan Pajajaran/Jalan Ring Road Utara, Jalan Raya Solo - Yogyakarta, and Jalan Semarang - Surakarta. 

Next, stay on Salatiga - Kertosono Toll Road / Solo - Kertosono Toll Road. After that, take Mojokerto - Kertosono Toll Road and Surabaya - Mojokerto Toll Road to Bangil - Rembang Toll Road/Gempol - Pasuruan Toll Road/Gempol - Rembang Toll Road at Penulupan. Exit the Bangil - Rembang Toll Road / Gempol - Pasuruan Toll Road / Gempol - Rembang Toll Road. After that take Jl. Raya Purut Lumbang and Jl. Raya Bromo to your destination at Cemoro Lawang. Continue to follow the road, then you will arrive at your destination.
