The unique potential of marine and cultural tourism led Wakatobi to be designated as the 8th Earth Biosphere Reserve in Indonesia. This was determined by UNESCO in 2012.

Wakatobi is also known as a real piece of paradise whose existence has gone global. Anyway, if you visit there you will not regret setting foot in the district whose capital is in Wangi-Wangi. Wakatobi is also home to the Bajo tribe who spend almost their entire lives above the sea. Not only the underwater beauty and unique culture of the people, the natural beauty is also so stunning.

Wakatobi National Park consists of 25 coral reef clusters along 600 km. Wakatobi is an acronym for the names of four major islands, namely Wangi-Wangi Island, Kaledupa Island, Tomia Island, and Binongko Island. Wakatobi National Park is located within the coral triangle. It contains the largest variety of coral, fish, mollusks and marine plant species in the world. Coral reef conditions in Wakatobi National Park are still normal. Fish abundance and biomass are always increasing while economically important fish tend to decline. Coral reefs are included in the benthic zone. Coral reefs in Wakatobi National Park are divided into hard corals and soft corals.

In this park, there is a panoramic view of the beauty of the underwater world which has 25 coral reef clusters. Coral reef clusters can be found around 112 species from 13 families located at 25 points along the 600 km coastline. In addition, there are 93 species of ornamental fish and several species of turtles. There are also several species of seabirds such as the brown rock goose, Malay mink, and Easian king prawn. This is what makes Wakatobi one of the favorite destinations for those who like diving and snorkeling.

Route to Wakatobi


There are 3 ways you can get to Wakatobi, namely by air, sea, and land routes. For the air route, you can travel through Haluole airport in South Konawe district, Southeast Sulawesi to Matahota airport in Wangi-Wangi district, Wakatobi regency.

As for the sea route, there are 3 areas whose ports serve crossings to Wakatobi. Namely Kendari City through the Kendari Night Ship port with a travel time of 10-11 hours. 

Then, with KM. Sabuk Nusantara or KM. Jetliner and KM. Sirimau owned by PT Pelni through Bungkutoko port, Abeli sub-district, Kendari city with a travel time of 1 day and 1 night and will stop at several other ports in Southeast Sulawesi before arriving at Panggulubelo port in South Wangi-Wangi sub-district, Wakatobi. 

From Baubau City, via Murhum harbor using KM. Sabuk Nusantara or KM. Jetliner and KM. Sirimau. There is also wooden boat transportation through Jembatan Batu Port, Baubau City to the 4 main islands in Wakatobi Regency, namely Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, and Binongko with different boats according to the route.

From Buton Regency, via Banabungi port in Pasarwajo sub-district, using a Fast Boat with a travel time of 2-3 hours. Or through Lasalimu port in South Lasalimu sub-district, Buton Regency, using a wooden boat with a travel time of 4-5 hours.

For land routes, you must use a ferry through the Kamaru ferry port in Lasalimu sub-district, Buton Regency, 2 ferries are serving the Kamari-Wanci and Kamaru-Kaledupa-Tomia-Binongko routes.
